BON with Marko Salonen

Marko Salonen
Creative Director
Who are you?
I’m Marko Salonen, and I’ve been working at BOND for 16 years, leading and crafting brand identity and packaging design projects. Creative ideation of all kinds is always exciting, whatever challenge we have on the table.

"As for the best thing about working at BOND, I would say the people, first and foremost, combined with a very diverse range of clients, industries, and projects.”
Favorite projects you've worked on?
Some top ones would be Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, Kotimaista, Allsorts, and Loupedeck.
If you could master any skill, what would you choose?
It would probably be a musical skill. I’d choose to be able to play the piano or guitar really well.
If you were a font, which font would you be and why?
One of the classic horror fonts, not sure which one. And that’s because I used to draw the logos of my favorite psychobilly bands in my early teenage years and also watched a lot of horror movies. That was my first inspirational dive into typography, and it had a big impact on me.

A current hot take?
Because I hate all things complex, I’ve ended up coming back to this thought so many times: “What you see is what you get.” For me, it means there can’t be any doubt in the message, the creative idea, the user experience, or any visual. The other way around, it also means that I don’t easily get things if they’re too complex.
What do you like to do outside of work?
Spending time at the cabin for the sake of the sauna, lake, nature, and woodwork. Tennis has been my biggest sport for a long time. I love it because it stops my brain from storming and forces me to focus. As a bonus, you get some exercise.

Lastly, what’s a random fact about you?
I’ve had long black hair and big earrings. Standard ’80s look.
Thank you, Marko!
